This list is broken into several categories,
because there were too many different kinds of poly songs.
I'm not personally familiar with all the songs below,
so if one doesn't fit its category, please let me know.
Ideally, send me lyrics so I can put them online and decide myself.
Author, title, and albums
are given if known.
Links for further information are given where available.
Artist links give more information about the artist.
Song title links take you to the lyrics.
Album links bring up the
amazon.com
page for the album;
you can read reviews, see the full track list, and buy it if you want.
Long-term Poly Relationship Songs
Criteria for inclusion in this list:
- There are at least 3 people involved.
- At least 2 people know this.
- At least one person wants the situation to persist or move ahead
in a way that keeps at least 3 people involved, and has all
of those people aware of the full situation.
Note that sexual involvement is not a requirement. Thus, we have
Sting's "Tea In The Sahara", which has multiple sisters involved
with a young man in some unspecified way ("they danced for his pleasure").
Joan Armatrading's "The Weakness In Me" describes a situation where the
main partner of the singer is not aware of the situation, but she clearly
doesn't like having to "make someone else some kind of an unknowing fool".

Poly Sex Songs
Criteria for inclusion in this list:
- At least one person wants to have sex involving 3 or more people.
Basically, this category is for songs which emphasize poly sexual acts
rather than poly relationships.
- Claudia Christian & Michael Jay, "Partners In The Sublime"

- Jani Lane, "Love In Stereo"
- Power Tool?, "Two Heads Are Better Than One"
- various, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (soundtrack)
- Tom Wilson Weinberg, "Threesome" (from the musical Ten Percent Revue)
"It's a fun song about three-way sex, with no particular indication
of whether the partners are emotionally involved or not.
Sex for one can be nice / sex for two isn't even a vice /
but sex for three is the perfect device / for breaking ... the ice.
Remainder Bin: Cheating & Sleeping Around
Criteria for inclusion in this list:
- At least one person wants to have more than one lover in their life.
Most of these songs aren't really poly in the sense that people
on the poly email list or the alt.polyamory newsgroup mean it, but some
of them do express some of the reasons why people get involved in poly.
- ???, "Bizarre Love Triangle"
- New Order, Brotherhood
- New Order, Substance
- New Order, The Best Of New Order
- Frente, Spin This V
The lyrics are a little difficult to penetrate,
but given the title there are enough hints to find
a little poly content.

- various, New Tradition Sings Old Tradition (1989, WEA/Warner Brothers)
- original Nashville cast, Always Patsy Cline (UNI/MCA)
A basic "someone took my lover away" song, but there's an implication
that the three might have tried to make it work before things fell apart,
because the three cigarettes are in an ashtray at the same table and
"I watched her take him from me".
- Patti Smith?, "We Three"
- Patti Smith Group, Easter
"about an assumedly non-consumated love triangle where,
although the 3 friends are undoubtedly close and loving, they are
not willing to break through that barrier and become intimate with more
than the one partner they prefer. Too bad for them." - Anji & Justin
And finally: What, me poly?
These songs are ones that someone thought were poly, but after
reading the lyrics I haven't got a clue as to why they thought that.
