Rima LXV

by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer
translated by H. Landman

The night came and I found no shelter,
     and I was thirsty...!, I drank my tears;
and I was hungry! My swollen eyes
     I closed to die!

I was in a desert! Although at my ears
arrived the raucous seething of the crowds,
I was orphaned and poor... The world was
a desert... for me!

Llegó la noche y no encontré un asilo,
     ¡y tuve sed...!, mis lágrimas bebí;
¡y tuve hambre! ¡Los hinchados ojos
     cerré para morir!

¡Estaba en un desierto! Aunque a mi oído
de las turbas llegaba el ronco hervir,
yo era huérfano y pobre... ¡El mundo estaba
desierto... para mí!
