Rima LXII

by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer
translated by H. Landman

At first it's a blurry and flickering glow,
shifting light ray slicing the sea,
presently it sparkles and grows and spreads
in a blazing explosion of clarity.

The brilliant shining is joy;
the timid shadow is grief;
Ay! when, in the dark night of my soul,
     will dawn bring me relief?

Primero es un albor trémulo y vago,
raya de inquieta luz que corta el mar;
luego chispea y crece y se difunde
en ardiente explosión de claridad.

La brilladora lumbre es la alegría;
la temerosa sombra es el pesar;
¡Ay!, en la oscura noche de mi alma,
     ¿cuándo amanecerá?
