Rima XLVII

I have been mystified by the deep abysses
  of the earth and the sky
and have seen their ends with my eyes
  or with my thoughts.

But, ay! I arrived at the abyss of a heart,
  and I leaned over to see,
and my soul and my eyes were dumbfounded:
so deep it was and so black!

Yo me he asomado a las profundas simas
   de la tierra y del cielo
y les he visto el fin con los ojos
   o con el pensamiento.

Mas, ¡ay! de un corazón llegué al abismo,
   y me incliné por verlo,
y mi alma y mis ojos se turbaron:
¡tan hondo era y tan negro!
