The Sonnets to JenniCam

by Howard A. Landman

In 1996, a college student named Jennifer decided to put her entire life on the net. Thus started the JenniCam, and the world hasn't been the same since.

The Sonnets to JenniCam are both a tribute to Jenni and a parody of Rilke's "The Sonnets to Orpheus", which I translated from the German. There are 55 poems in the Rilke set, but I've only done a dozen or so in the JenniCam series so far. I was averaging about one a month for a while, but stopped writing them for quite a while. Lately I've added a couple.

Each poem is illustrated with one image from the cam. Some of these are "R-rated", and a few may be "X". If you are likely to find this offensive, please either turn off image loading in your browser or do not proceed. On the other hand, the images were all carefully selected to match the poems, and the poems written to match the images, so without both of them together you'll be missing quite a bit.

For some reason, many people find these poems upsetting. Some of them seem to assume that because I wrote some poems from the viewpoint of some person, that I must be that person. The fallacious nature of this reasoning can perhaps best be appreciated by noting that, if we accept it, then we must also believe that the poet Rilke must have been a panther because he wrote a poem about what it was like to be one.

Anyway, although this series was originally intended to be 55 poems, I haven't written many lately and it looks like I may not complete even the first half. Consider it an experiment, perhaps one that failed.

I've also written other poems and some songs.

If you're a fan of Jenni and don't feel that your view of her is represented here, please write me and tell me why you like her. I'll try to incorporate your viewpoint into a future sonnet.
