Books on Hypatia of Alexandria

A library card catalog shows you which books a particular library has.
This page is the opposite: an inverted card catalog that shows you
which libraries have certain books! In this case, I've collected all
the books and magazine articles which appeared in my searches of the
world's libraries for information about Hypatia of Alexandria, the great
mathematician, scientist, and teacher of antiquity. Also included
are a number of items identified by Dr. M.A.B. Deakin.
My longer-term goal is to put all of the older material (whose copyright
has expired or never existed) on the net in machine-readable form.
If you want to help, and have access to any of the items listed below,
ESPECIALLY the very rare ones, please let me know by email.
My address is at the bottom of this form.
The entry process has begun; so far only a few items have been entered,
but it's a start.
Most of the library references below were obtained through the net, using the
University of Kansas' CWIS database, which pointed to
almost every known electronic library card catalog in the world.
The United States "Other Libraries" list alone was staggering enough!
Unfortunately, this resource moved or disappeared, so I have had to
remove my (broken) links to it. If you know where this is now, please
let me know!
If you're broadly interested in Women And Science,
click here for a more general bibliography.
A few of these books are still available. For those, I give a
link into amazon.com. If you are buying more than one such book, please
follow one link, add the book to your shopping cart, and then come back here
to follow the next link. Amazon.com pays a small commission on each book
sold this way. This costs you
nothing extra, but provides the only financial support this website gets.

Reviews of this book:
- Wilbur R. Knorr, "A Legendary Thinker", Science v268 p.744, 5 May 1995
"Through a subtle reading of the ancient sources Dzielska
reconstructs a powerful and persuasive account of Hypatia's life.
She also addresses the difficult task of describing her philosophy
... with enagagement and finesse."

- John Leonard, The Nation
"Dzielska demystifies Hypatia, sifting patiently through the
original sources, from the Suda lexicon to the correspondence
of Synesius of Cyrene."
- Anthony Gottlieb, New York Times Book Review
"This gem of academic detective work may be the last word on a
subject that has fascinated for centuries."
M.A.B. Deakin writes "for the most part scholarly and reliable ...
There is a brave attempt to discuss Hypatia's mathematics, but
unfortunately this aspect is of extremely poor quality."

Abstract: This study examines Kingsley's novels through the prism of
the Victorian periodical press. Such a contextual approach is
appropriate since Kingsley's novels were occasional, or, as one critic
remarked, "improvised." Yeast, for example, reacts to the fading but
dangerous allure of the Tractarian movement; Alton Locke embodies
the Chartist movement and the crying need for sanitation reform;
Hypatia attacks the "gnostic" denial of sex in nineteenth-century
England; The Water Babies confronts the demands made upon Christians
by the theory of evolution; Two Years Ago combines a condemnation of
Dissenters as life-denying with a simultaneous rejection of
art-for-art's sake; Westward Ho offers a historical model for the
Crimean War; and Hereward the Wake, perhaps surprisingly, affirms
martial fidelity in the face of mistaken notions of "Muscular
Christianity.". For Kingsley, a central question was the purpose
of literature for an activist Christian. That it had to have a
purpose was, to him, beyond dispute; that it was being put to
increasingly diverse and antithetical purposes led him to embrace
the still dubious genre of the novel. He used it as a pulpit from
which to address a congregation far larger than any that might fill
his parish church at Eversley. Novelists with clearly rhetorical aims
invite debate on the artistic merits of their fiction, and this is
true for Kingsley. But the conversation between his contemporary
critics is also a provocative display of their own philosophical,
political, and religious commitments. As fierce a polemicist as
Kingsley proved himself to be, he was nonetheless attempting to offer
his readers something like a "via media" that would allow all factions
to support Queen and empire. His desire to extend "civilization" by
acts of real or bogus incorporation impressed critics variously as
facile, foggy or "jesuitical." These "extremists" (Roman Catholics,
Evangelicals, and atheists) had another England in mind, and their
journals led the attack on Kingsley.

This episode is the historic television declaration of the urgent
need for a planetary perspective to meet the madness of the nuclear
arms race. The tragic story of the martyrdom of Hypatia is told.
We retrace the 15 billion year journey from the big bang to the
present - a planet infested with 60,000 nuclear weapons.
Ted Turner and Carl Sagan discuss issues that are vital to the
survival of our species on the earth. Dr. Sagan then explains the
many benefits of the space program.

This booklet gives two- or three-page biographies of
seventeen women scientists. They range in history from
Agnodice (physician, 300 B.B.) to Jane Goodall (born 1934).
In addition, brief sketches are given of twenty-three other
women scientists. This anthology is intended to fill a need
for curriculum materials and literature that provide
positive role models of women as scientists.

Magazine articles dealing with Hypatia
Thanks to the CARL system for help finding these.
To use CARL's UnCover periodical database, first
telnet pac.carl.org,
choose PAC, select 5 for vt100 support, choose 1 (UnCover).
[Interface may change. This worked as of April 6 1998.]
This wonderful service not only allows searching for magazine articles
by subject or title etc.,
but also will deliver the article to you for a fee.
For example, each of the articles below would cost around $10.
If your time is valuable,
this is cheaper than searching through library stacks yourself.
And browsing is free.
Minor irritation: if you're idle for a few minutes,
they give you only 30 seconds warning before disconnecting you.
Another good index is ERIC. I got into it via U. Buffalo.
Newspaper indices have been useless so far.

The city of Alexandria was founded by Alexander the Great on Egypt's
Mediterranean shore three centuries before the birth of Christ. This
volume highlights various aspects of this city, which was a stepping
stone between the civilizations of ancient Egypt and Greece. The
introductory chapter, by Morsi Saad El-Din, is an overview of the city
and the book. Gamal Mokhtar traces the origins of the relations between
Egypt and Greece that provide the context for Alexander's founding of
the city. Mostafa El-Abbadi describes the ancient city plan and
illuminates the dynamics that shaped the city for the next millennium.
He also devotes a chapter to the Great Library and its research centre,
the Mouseion. Abdel/Azim Ramadan traces Alexandria's growth and evolution
during the last 300 years, from the French Expedition of 1798 to the
revival under Mohammed Ali (1805-1849) to the modern age.
