Drug Uses
Allopurinol is indicated for curing of gout. It is used to treat high uric acid levels in the blood or urine caused by certain types of cancer chemotherapy. It is also can be used to cure certain people with calcium oxalate kidney stones and high amounts of uric acid in the urine. It can also used in other situations as recommended by your physician.
How Taken
Allopurinol is taken by mouth. Call your physician regarding the dose suitable for your condition. To avoid stomach upset take Allopurinol with a meal. It is advised to drink extra fluids while undergoing treatment with Allopurinol. It can take 2 to 6 weeks to receive the full benefit of Allopurinol. Continue taking this drug even if you feel well.

Allopurinol can cause dizziness or lightheadedness. These effects can worsen if Allopurinol is taken with alcohol. Take Allopurinol with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to this medicine. Follow the diet and exercise program given to you by your health care provider. If your symptoms don't improve or if they worsen, visit your doctor. Allopurinol should be used only by the patient for whom it has been suggested. Don't take less or more or take it more often than directed by your doctor.
